Why you don’t need to safely remove USB drives in Windows In older Microsoft operating systems, such as Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you had to use the “Safely Remove Hardware” feature. Although you could simply ignore it, reconnecting an unsafely removed USB drive might have alerted you that the files stored on it had a problem.
